The Culpeper Family Bio

We are a family of four pubs (and our Little Farm in Deptford) with individual personalities and a shared set of values. Created and run by a collective of chefs, architects, brewers, gardeners, producers and hospitality aficionados.

Our story began in 2014 with the transformation of the then Princess Alice into The Culpeper, and in the following 10 years the family has expanded to four pubs and a farm, and in 2024 received our B-Corp certification. The result is five unique places that allow us the space to bring our manifesto to life, and contribute to London’s thriving hospitality landscape.

We're conscious of and passionate about where our produce comes from, how it's been grown and harvested and how it impacts our environment. We're committed to making better choices and using hospitality as a force for good. Joining the Culpeper Family means being a part of something that values people; from our team to our guests, our growers to suppliers, and the communities that our buildings are a part of.

We love to be a part of those moments that you can only experience in hospitality; the first tomatoes of the season, that glass of pet nat in the sun on the rooftop, house made bread lashings of butter.

The Culpeper

The firstborn of The Culpeper Family, named after local hero 17th century English herbalist and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper. The Culpeper is a restored East End Victorian pub over four floors, including a pub on the ground floor, a French bistro on the first floor, five bedrooms on the second floor, and a roof garden wood-fired grill on the top floor with a view of the city skyline.

The Duke Organic

Britain’s first organic pub, certified by the Soil Association since 1998. Colourful, seasonal food and considered drinks served across the main pub room and conservatory. Acquired by The Culpeper Family in 2019, with continued commitment to organic cooking and producers, short supply chains and ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The Green

A Clerkenwell pub full of natural light and plants. A grade 2* listed building that’s been home to a pub since 1781 and was at some point home to the country’s first women’s boxing club. Bright, colourful ground floor and upstairs events space, with a thoughtfully curated selection of local beers, seasonal cocktails and low intervention wine list.

The Buxton

A natural-focused wine bar & hotel at the end of Brick Lane with 15 bookable bedrooms and a rooftop for hotel guests. Characterfully restored with old charm and contemporary features by the The Culpeper Family in 2019 with an outdoor terrace, a smart open-kitchen serving breakfast and all-day small plates alongside a seasonally-changing low intervention wine list.
